Best Female Driven Shows You Should Be Watching

We’ve been isolated in the house for 5 months at this point, so we know ya’ll have watched nearly everything on Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Peacock, and so on and so forth. But in the event that you haven’t exhausted all entertainment options, let us introduce you to some shows with fantastic female characters, for your latest binge watch session.

Younger

Liza, a 40 year old mom poses as a 27 year old in order to bounce back from her divorce, and land a job in the cutthroat world of publishing. Sounds absolutely ludicrous, if Sutton Foster didn’t actually look as youthful in the lead role as she does. Between the publishing wars, the intense love triangle between Liza and her 20-something boyfriend and her 40-something boss, this is the perfect show to get lost in over the weekend. Watch on Hulu.

Grace and Frankie

When two women of a certain age, find out their husbands are leaving them…for each other, hilarity is sure to ensue. Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin make a an amazing duo in this Netflix original. As they deal with the fallout of their husbands’ love affair, Grace and Frankie begin to remember who they are, and what makes them a couple of bad ass women!

I’m Sorry

Starring Andrea Savage, I’m Sorry is actually one of the funniest shows that’s somehow completely under the radar. Andrea is a comedy writer living in L.A. and suffers from a bad case of word vomit and unawareness. It’s one of the rare shows that depict a wife, mother, and career woman as whole, nuanced, and relatable.

Ms. America

This FX show that you can find on Hulu, tells the story about the ratification of the ERA (Equal Rights Amendment) through the eyes of the second wave feminist leaders such as Gloria Steinem, Shirley Chilsom, Betty Freidan, and more. Cate Blanchett stars as Phyllis Schlafly, the conservative darling at the time, who led a movement against the ERA. The show explores how the women’s movement of the '70s helped give rise to the conservative moral majority and forever shifted the political landscape.

derry girls

This is a fun one! This Netflix show follows a group of teenage girls, and one guy, growing up in 90’s Northern Ireland during a time of political unrest. The show does a marvelous job of depicting life during ‘the troubles’, and the effects it had over teenagers, who were just trying to be, well teenagers. If you aren’t good with accents you may need to watch this show with the subtitles, but either way it’s a good craic.

Fleabag

I’m gonna be honest here, I didn’t really like Season 1 of Fleabag, but the 2nd Season—quite possibly the best season of television ever. This Pheobe Waller Bridge masterpeiece is about a dry-witted woman living in London, and dealing with a recent tragedy. It’s second season focuses on the character, referred to only as Fleabag, as she navigates her infatuation with a priest (yes you read that right) , and trying to get her life together. You can catch it on Amazon Prime, and I promise you’ll be thanking me.
